INTERNSHIPS, VOLUNTEERS AND FELLOWSHIPS

SSBx is always looking for competent and committed volunteers and interns to help us do our work.

Interns are given a large amount of responsibility, and most intern positions require a 10-20 hour commitment per week for the school year, or 35 hours per week during the summer months.

Fellowships are sponsored internships that offer stipends. SSBx is able to host fellows, and we have a successful track record in this area. Obtaining sponsorship is the responsibility of the Fellow.

Volunteers are required for many events and projects. A wide variety of skills, time commitments, and interests may be catered for.

Specific internships and volunteer positions, based on current operational requirements, may be advertised below.

INTERNSHIPS

Interns will gain experience working in a pre-eminent environmental justice organization dedicated to ending discrimination against South Bronx residents. A high degree of exposure to environmental justice issues will be gained in a busy, dynamic setting. Interns will participate in staff meetings at which strategy is determined and plans are made. SSBx Interns receive close supervision and work side by side with staff members working on important issues and projects.

Interns are given a large amount of responsibility, and most intern positions require a 10-20 hour commitment per week during the school year, or 35 hours per week during the summer months.

It’s not all glamour: there will be filing, copying and other administrative and support tasks to be done. But you will be appreciated, and more responsibility will be offered depending on the length of your internship, and if you’re up for it.

Who can apply for SSBx internships?

You do not have to be currently enrolled as a student to be an SSBx intern. A significant time commitment, however, is required. Internships are unpaid unless they are sponsored as Fellowships.

Successful candidates must have the following skills:

  • Some knowledge of and commitment to environmental and justice issues.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in standard office computer and internet programs
  • Desire and commitment to work in a multicultural environment where diversity is an important institutional value.

How can I apply for an SSBx Internship?

SSBx is always seeking qualified, committed interns to help us achieve our goals. We accept applications for internships at any time of year. We have hosted interns from around the country and the world. Applications will be accepted, and positions filled, on a rolling basis.

In addition, summer internships are available starting from May/June. Interns will be expected to work 35 hours per week, with flexible hours based on operational requirements.

All internship applicants should indicate the area or areas in which they would like to work; any foreign language skills they have; and whether they have obtained fellowship sponsorship.

Applications will be accepted by email only, and should include a cover letter, resume, and two reference contacts. Applications should be directed to ssbxinfo@gmail.com.

Please also include the approximate dates you are available and your estimated time commitment per week.

Specific internships, based on current operational requirements, may be advertised below.
