Sustainable South Bronx and RelightNY have teamed up to Green The Ghetto™ HYDE Elementary School Auditorium • 730 Bryant Ave. • Hunts Point Tuesday, FEB 19 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Over 500 South Bronx students from ACTION at the Point, the Bronx Guild, Bronx Studio School, Eva’s Day Care, and HYDE elementary school surveyed their own homes and their neighbors to see how many conventional light bulbs could be replaced with more energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL's). Relight NY supplied the CFL's free. Supplying low-income homes with energy-saving CFL bulbs helps families to save on utility costs, reduces local power plant emissions in areas like the South Bronx, and fights global warming. See chart below. The results were astounding! Over 4000 light bulbs will be replaced by these environmentally conscious young people. They started with their own homes, and then went door to door to bring other families on board. Kyeesha Fountain, a student from ACTION @ the Point surveyed her entire building, and is replacing 410 light bulbs all by herself! The students at HYDE elementary school are responsible for replacing over 2,000 bulbs! Together, the students will save families over $38,000 in electricity costs per year, and reduce electric consumption by 482,000 Kilo Watt Hours per year! And this is just the beginning... Come see these Climate Change Pioneers recieve their CFL's from the Relight NY Crew, and celebrate this important accomplishment.
